Virgil (born "Virgilio") Bertolozzi was born January 26, 1899, in Lucca, Italy, the son of Darius Bertolozzi. He arrived in the United States at the age of 16 on March 20, 1915, having traveled from Genoa, Italy to New York City on the S.S. Re D'Italia. He had been living in Mazzione, Italy, and gave his occupation as "laborer." He was en route to Pocatello, Idaho, where he had a cousin already established.
In 1918 Virgil was living in the town of Ruth, Nevada- a company owned town for the Robinson Mine, an open-pit copper mine. When he registered for the draft during WWI, he was 19 years old and working as a miner for the Nevada Consolidated Copper Company. He was described as "medium height, blue eyes and brown hair." He had at least one relative, "Giovanni Bertolozzi" living in San Francisco, California.
Virgil declared his intention to become a United States citizen on November 11, 1943.
Virgil Bertolozzi died August 8, 1981, aged 82, at the Montefiore Medical Center. He was buried on Hart Island.
