Egbert Barnard was born January 22, 1899, in Willikies Village, Antigua, in the British West Indies, the son of "Miss L. Walter." He came to the United States in August of 1918 on the ship SS Guiana.

Coming to the US during WWI, Egbert was required to register for the draft. He gave his citizenship as the "BWI", and stated that he worked as an elevator porter. He was "medium height" with a "slender build." He was then living at 32 West 136th Street in New York City.

He applied for US citizenship in May of 1925, relenquishing his allegiance to "George V, King of Great Britain and Ireland."

On March 1, 1930, Egbert married Constance Melvina Dore. Constance was born October 16, 1899, in Rices Village on the island of Nevis, also in the British West Indies. She traveled to New York City from St. Martin (like Egbert, on the SS Guiana) with her aunt and uncle, Julie and Daniel Van Remondt, and their three children- Annie, Susanne, and Herve. Constance stated that her nearest relative was her grandmother, Mrs. A. Devers, living in St. Martin. At this time they were listed as Dutch citizens on the ship manifest. Constance gave her occupation as a "domestic."

After their marriage in 1930 the newlyweds made their home on East 131st Street in Manhattan. Egbert was then working as a motion picture operator.

Through at least most of the 1950's the couple lived at 140 West 144th Street.

Egbert Barnard died January 20, 1982, at the Bronx Lebanon Hospital Center, and was buried on Hart Island. Constance continued living in the Bronx, until she too died in June of 1987.
