William Gerard Trainor was born October 16, 1912 in Boston, Massachusetts, the son of Patrick John and Margaret (Mooney) Trainor. In 1920 the family lived on Cherokee Street in Boston, where his father worked as a police officer for the railroad. William had at least five siblings: Lawrence, Catherine, Edward, Francis and Margaret.
By 1930 William's father Patrick was working as a compositor for a printing press. William followed him into this occupation, working as a compositor for Fidelity Press at 368 Congress Street in Boston.
On September 16, 1936 in Manhattan, William married Elizabeth M. Van Schyndel. Born December 19, 1911 in Amsterdam, Elizabeth (or Bessie) was the daughter of Dutch immigrants Peter and Mary (Mittelmeyer) Van Schyndel.
In 1940 William and Elizabeth were living at 320 Hill Street in Boston, and had been joined by a daughter, Patricia, born around 1939. In 1942 they were living at 320 Savin Hill Avenue, and William was required to register for the World War II draft. He was described as 5' 11 1/2" tall, weighed 160 pounds, with blue eyes, brown hair, and a light complexion.
William's father Patrick Trainor died May 31, 1941, and his mother, Margaret, died May 28, 1948.
William, Elizabeth, and Patricia had moved to New Jersey by 1950. They were living at 550 Grove Street in East Orange, with William again working as a compositor for a print company.
William Trainor's last residence was in Flushing, Queens. He died on April 18, 1992 at St. Johns-Queens. He was buried January 13, 1994 on Hart Island.
