In the 1940 Census, 8 year old Wilfred was residing at the "Little Flower House of Providence for Homeless Colored Children," a residential center for "orphaned, abandoned, and neglected children" in Riverhead, Suffolk County, New York. He was in the second grade. There were 359 other children residing at the institute at the time, and Sister Mary Antonilla (Justine Ziebeska, 47 yrs old from Pennsylvania) was listed as "Head" of the household.
His "inferred" home in 1935 was also Riverhead, Suffolk County, New York, and he may have been born there as well.
