Gustav Walter Schondube was born on the 2nd of September 1903 in Hohendodeleben, a picturesque village in Germany. Walter departed Germany from the city of Bremen, a major port of emmigration for Europeans, leaving behind his parents, Gustave and Emma, and two siblings. He arrived at the port of Boston on 17 February 1927 and from there made his way to New York where a sister, Liesbeth, or Elizabeth, was already established. In 1928, a brother, named Ernst, would follow, and in 1929 another Schondube sibling, named Elli, would also journey from Germany to the United States.
Walter married Adeline Kuck. Adeline was also German and records show she and Walter made two trips back to Germany during the 1950's.
Walter worked as a building superindent and is described on his WWII Draft Registration Card as being 5 feet 7 inches tall, with gray eyes and brown hair.
Ernst Schondube married, had children, and moved to Vermont where he died in 1976.
Gustav Walter Schondube died at the Pennisula Center Hospital, Far Rockaway, on 25 October 1983 and was buried on Hart Island in December 1983.
