Stanley Gabris was born April 12, 1901, in Norwich, Connecticut, the son of George and Veronica Gabris- both Polish immigrants. Other children in the family were Anton/Anthony, Helen M., Rosie, Fanny, Vincent, and Frank. The family lived in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Stanley later stated that he had completed the eighth grade in elementary school.
By 1920, at the age of 19, Stanley was working as a laborer in a factory. He later was self-employed as a painter, and worked as a carpenter and a gas attendant.
In 1940 Stanley enlisted for one year in the National Guard, serving in the Coast Artillery Corps. Through 1942 Stanley remained single with no dependents.
Stanley Gabris died October 24, 1980, and was buried on Hart Island.
