Solomon Isaac Mendel was born August 2, 1913, in Manchester, England, the son (and only child) of Michael Myer and Liebe (Shapiro) Mendel. They emigrated to the United States, arriving at Ellis Island on December 18, 1916, after traveling on the ship New York. The father, Michael gave his occupation as "model maker."
In 1920 the family lived on Knickerbocker Ave. in Brooklyn, New York, where Michael had a "crockery store." Ten years later finds them living on Sackman St., where Solomon is a student, and Michael is a carpenter.
By 1940, Solomon had completed college, and was working as a clerk. The small family had moved once again to Clinton St., where Michael continued working as a carpenter.
Solomon I. Mendel died December 13, 1989, at Beth Israel Medical Center, and was buried on Hart Island.
