Paolo (or Paul) G. Caviglia was born August 24, 1905, in Savona, Italy, the son of Luigi Caviglia. As a young man in Italy he worked as an "iceman," a profession rendered obsolete by modern refrigeration.
He traveled to the United States from Italy (by way of Havana, Cuba) on the S.S. Siboney, arriving at New York City on July 4, 1939. He was described as being 5'6" tall, with a dark complexion, black hair, and brown eyes. His "friend" (as listed on the ship records), Luisa Chiesa, who lived at 122 Macdougal Street in New York City, was the wife of an apartment house superintendant, possibly his intended residence in the U.S.
Paolo (at least during the 1990's) lived at 31 Downing Street, a five-story apartment building in the West Village neighborhood of New York City.
Paolo Caviglia died June 14, 1998, at St. Vincent's- Manhattan, and was buried on Hart Island.
