Moses Haile June was born August 31, 1912, in Kershaw County, South Carolina, the son of Sallie June and Moses Haile. He had a sister, Daisy B., born around 1915. The family lived in Wateree, South Carolina, at least through 1930.
In 1940 Moses was living in Columbia, South Carolina, where he worked at the State Hospital as a "milker" in the facility's dairy. He was married to Henrietta, who was also employed at the same hospital as a maid. The couple had two sons, Wilbur (or Wilbert) and Louis Edward.
In 1942 while Moses still worked at the State Hospital as a "dairy worker," Henrietta was working at the Warwick Laundry and Cleaners. By 1946 Moses was employed in a similar field, working at the Dixie Laundry; and in 1949 at the Cola Laundry and Dry Cleaning.
