Mike Slokevage was born in Shenandoah, PA on May 15, 1921. He was a US Army veteran who served in WWII, after which he relocated to NYC. Married in 1946, he settled in Queens and had a family. After his divorce, his life was thrown into flux, and he ended up living at the Andrews Hotel on the Bowery. In 1998 he was profiled in the book "Flophouse: Life on the Bowery", but his name was misspelled by the authors as "Mike Slokevace". When he passed, his name was once again misspelled, but SLOKEVAGE is his real name. Now that he's been located, the work will begin to gain him his rightful military memorial.
Included here is a photo of Mike, taken in 1998 by Harvey Wang for the book.
