According to U.S. social security records, Matilda was born on 12 April 1903 in New York. Her parents were listed as Father:
William Elkin and Mother: Bertha Fiena (According to Census records, Bertha may have gone by "Birdie.")
The 1915 NY State Census shows the family living in NY, NY. Matilda is shown as having two sisters at that time, Helen, two years older, and Katherine, 1 year younger. Her father's occupation is listed as chauffer.
The 1930 census shows the family living in Manhattan. Living with Matilda and her parents was er sister, Helen (age 27 in 1930) and Matilda's grandson, Frank Richards (age 7). Helen is using her maiden name, so perhaps she was divorced. Matilda's occupation is listed as "housekeeping."
The 1940 census shows a Matilda Elkin of the correct age as a patient at Pilgrim State Hospital, which was a psychiatric hospital on Long Island.
Matilda's parents are still alive at the time of the 1940 Census and still living in New York, New York on East 62nd Street. Her sister, Helen, still lives with them, although she has remarried to William R. Rogers, who also lives with the family. Her son Frank Richards, is 17, and still living at home with his mother and grandparents.
According to her social security death record, Matilda's last residence was in Far Rockaway Queens.
Another interesting note is that Matilda did not apply for a social security number until 1968.
Her nephew, Frank Richards, if he is still alive, would be about 94, but perhaps he had children of his own. I will see if I can track that down.
