(Ella) Mae Courance was born in Ridge Spring, South Carolina on December 9, 1910, 1912, or 1915. (Records vary.) She was married to Edgar "Spider" Courance (b. Cincinnati, 1903 - d. New York, December 3, 1969), a professional jazz clarinettist and tenor saxophone player.
From 1934, Edgar performed regularly with Tiny Bradshaw, Freddy Taylor, Fletcher Allen, Bill Coleman, and others, working regularly in the 52nd St. clubs. Later in the 1930s Mae accompanied him to Paris, across France, and into Egypt.
They returned to New York via Naples in March 1940, their address listed as 168 W. 132nd St. Later that year they moved to 50 W. 112th St. Both buildings still exist.
I can find no record of Mae's occupation other than Bill Coleman saying she often cooked for the musicians abroad.
Edgar left the country again in 1945 and 1947 on USO tours. Heart attacks stopped him from performing after 1966. He and Mae had no children.
