story

Louis (born Leopold or "Lipo") Soroker, was born March 13, 1910, in Russia, the son of Israel and Rebecca/Ryroka Soroker. Other children in the family were his two sisters born in Russia: Dora/Divojra born in 1903, and Celia/Zipa born in 1905; and little sister Rosa, born around 1925 in the United States. Prior to coming to the U.S., the family lived in Maidon/Midon, Russia and Czertkow, Poland. The upheaval caused by WWI and the Russian Revolution accounts for the discrepencies involving the Russian/Polish border. Immigration records state that Rebecca and the three oldest children were born in Majdam, Poland, rather than Russia. The father, Israel, was already in the U.S. in 1911, but the rest of the family remained in Russia until after 1918, when he petitioned for naturalization, relenquishing his allegiance to "the present Government of Russia." The family was finally reunited when Rebecca, Louis, Dora and Celia landed at Ellis Island on November 20, 1922. The had traveled from Southampton, England to New York City on the ship Orduna.

From 1924 to at least 1933 the family lived on Lee St. in Atlanta, Georgia, where Israel and Rebecca worked as grocers, and the children were students, and then "clerks" or "salesladies."Louis later stated that his education consisted of four years of high school.

In 1940 the family was living on Chester St. in New York City. Louis was 30 years old, single, lived with his parents and sister Rosa, and worked in a shoe polish factory. When WWII broke out, Louis enlisted in the Army on November 30, 1942, "for the duration of the war...plus six months." His civilian occupation was described as "production of industrial chemicals", he was "single without dependents", and was 5'9" tall and weighed 145 pounds.

Louis Soroker last known address was in the Bronx, and he died on January 10, 1990, and was buried on Hart Island.
