John Henry Schottler Jr. was born November 30, 1907 in Jersey City, New Jersey, the son of John Henry and Louise I. Schottler. Both parents were German immigrants. The family in 1910 lived at 817 Monastery Street in Hoboken. John Sr. supported the family by working as a cabinet builder. John Jr. was joined by two siblings: Phillip in 1908, and Louise F. in 1910. The family moved frequently, in 1915- 210 E. 41st Street, New York City; 1920- 107 Lexington Avenue; 1925- 236 E. 27th Street.

In 1930 John Sr. was working as a manager in a clock business, with John Jr. at the age of 23, working as a typist in the same business.

When John Jr. registered for the draft he signed his name as "J. Henry Schottler." He was described as 5' 9" tall, weighed 204 pounds, with brown eyes, brown hair, and a dark complexion. He was living at 430 Columbus Avenue in New York City, presumably on his own, as his mother was living at 100 W. 74th Street, and his father at 249 E. 52nd Street.

In 1950 at the age of 42, John Jr. was living as a lodger at 55 W. 84th Street, room 16. He was single, never married, and worked in the field of electronics.

Between 1950 and 1980 John Jr. was living at 11 W. 70th Street in New York City.

John Henry Schottler Jr. died June 1, 1980, and was buried June 25, 1980 on Hart Island.
