Johannes Svan was born on the island of Formsi in the beautiful West Estonian Archipelago on the 4th (or possibly 14th) of January 1901. Formsi, historically inhabited by Swedish Estonians, was evacuated during WWII and has a population today of around only 400 people.

Johannes was a merchant seaman and travelled extensively during his years aboard ship.  On his 1942 WWII Draft Registration Card, Johannes states that he is employed by the Cunard White Star Line whose base of operations was Peir 55 in Manhattan.  The Cunard White Star Shipping Company was an amalgamation of two of the most powerful shipping lines that sailed the Atlantic waters.

Johannes is described on the draft card as 6 feet tall with blue eyes, brown hair, and a light complexion.  Although, an Army Enlistment File states that he stood 6 feet 2'' tall.

Johannes Svan died on the 8th of June 1982 and was buried on Hart Island on the 25th of June 1982.
