Joaquin T. Lieno was born August 25, 1915, in Cabada, Portuguese West Africa (now known as Angola.) He was a sailor, working as a "wiper", someone who cleans engines and machinery on a ship. Much of the time he traveled on the S.S. Buckeye State, but also crewed on the American Victory, Alexander White, Gloria, Pierre Soule, Thomas F. Meagher, Tobias E. Stansbury, and the Rio Jachel. He covered much of the globe, traveling to ports in England, Germany, Japan, Korea, France, Cuba, Panama, Netherlands, and Argentina.
In the early 1950's he flew in and out of Idlewild Airport in New York, when needed to crew on ships in Europe. He was not a citizen, appearing on those manifests as an "alien".
Joaquin T. Lieno died May 27, 1982, aged 76. On June 23, 1982, he was buried on Hart Island.
