John Henry Frederick Bollendonk was born in New York City on 11 Oct 1891. His parents John and Antionette (nee Klemme) were German- Austrian immigrants. He had two siblings; Walter William John Bollendonk, a skilled and respected artist of seascapes, whose work is available for purchase today online, and sister, Louise Bollendonk Barnitt.
Henry served in the National Guard during WWI and worked most of his life as a radio operator on merchant ships. He traveled extensively as a seaman, particularly to central America and England.
In 1930, he married Emma Vogt, a teacher, who died in 1978. Henry's sister, Louise Barnitt, died in 1974 and his brother, Walter, in 1977.
Henry died at the Mary Immaculate Hospital in Jamaica, New York on 3 March 1983 and was buried on Hart Island 11 May 1983.
