
Harry Hart was born January 19, 1885 in Kalush (Kalusz), Austria. The area where he was born reverted to Poland in 1919. Harry stated both of his parents were born in Austria, and he spoke German as his native language. He later stated that he had only an eighth grade education. He immigrated to America in 1910. Sometime prior to 1918 he married a young lady named Rose. She was born in Russia around 1898, and came to the US in 1914. She gave her native language as Yiddish. In 1918 Harry was working as a waiter at the station of the Staten Island Ferry. In 1920 the couple was living at 436 E. 6th St. in Manhatten. Harry continued his career as a waiter in a restaurant. By the time of the 1940 US Federal Census, Harry was widowed, living on 5th St. in NYC, and working as a cook. In 1942 as a consequence of WWII, he was required to register for the draft. Still living on 5th St., he was working at a delicatessen owned by Harry Finestein in Jamaica, Long Island. Harry Hart died November 30, 1980, at the age of 96, and was laid to rest on Hart Island.
