Gerald Otto, Aquinas Institute
Gerald Frederic Otto was born October 17, 1906 in Rochester, New York, the son of Joseph and Mary (Maier) Otto. Gerald had three siblings: Celeste, Beatrice and Linus. In 1910 the family was living at 50 Park Street in Rochester, with Gerald's widowed grandmother, Mary Maier. Joseph provided for the family working as an engraver/lithographer.
By 1915 the family had moved to 55 Culver Road in Rochester, with grandmother Maier living next door. They would remain in this location at least until 1930.
In 1925 Joseph had changed careers as the technology changed and demand for engraving lessened, he became an insurance agent. Celeste became a teacher, Gerald, Beatrice and Linus were all still students. Gerald attended the Aquinas Institute in Rochester, and in 1929 he was a student at the University of Rochester.
The 1930 census recorded Gerald as a writer working for a magazine company. Sometime around 1931 Gerald married Eleanor Deluska, the daughter of Leo and Mary Deluska. Gerald and Eleanor made a trip to Europe in 1931, returning to the United States from Gdynia, Poland, arriving August 3, 1931 on the S.S. Bird City.
In April of 1940 Gerald and Eleanor were living at 1353 Pacific Street in Brooklyn. Gerald was working as a contractor running his own business. In October that same year Gerald registered for the draft. He gave his address as 203 W. 67th Street in New York City, while his wife Eleanor remained at the Pacific Street address. Gerald stated that he was employed by the Brooklyn Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children. He was described as 5' 11" tall, weighed 155 pounds, with brown eyes, brown hair and a light complexion.
Gerald's mother Mary Maier Otto died around 1946, and his father Joseph Otto on April 21, 1950.
In 1948 Gerald married Rose Wyler in New Jersey. She had been divorced earlier that year from Paul Kosak. She brought three step-children to the relationship.
The family was living on Second Avenue in New York City in 1950. Gerald was a social worker for a city public welfare agency. Rose was a part-time writer for "various publications."
Gerald's Social Security number was issued in 1962 in New York State. He was able to claim Social Security benefits beginning September 27, 1971. His last residence was in New York City.
Gerald Frederic Otto died January 2, 1993, and was buried more than a year later, November 9, 1994, on Hart Island.
