Gerald Andrew Beirne is my great-uncle, brother to my maternal grandfather, Michael. Gerald was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland on 5 July 1903 to parents Michael and Mary. He was one of nine children. He left home in 1919 following the death of his mother and was naturalised in New York in 1923. He spent many years travelling while working on ships.


Although I'm saddened to find that Gerald is buried at Hart island, I am also very glad to have found his final resting and I pray that although he obviously didn't have much, that he had a happy life. I hope, one day, to be able to travel to the US to visit Hart Island and pay my respects in person to my great-uncle who, although I didn't have the fortune to meet, I have much love and affection for. He was never forgotten and never will be.
