Geneva Huff was born on the 10th of May 1891 in Clarksville, Virginia. Located on the banks of Kerr Lake near the North Carolina border, Clarksville was the first town incorporated in Mecklenburg County and was quickly settled because of the temperate climate and the fine tobacco soil.
Geneva was one of eleven children born to Joseph Columbus Huff and Panthea Phillips Huff. Joseph was a farmer and later manager of a general store for many years. The other children in the family were: William, Joseph Jr., James, George, Herbert, Donnie, Martha, Maude, Quincy and Ressie.
Geneva lived in Scranton, Pennsylvania during the 1930's working as a naturopath (A system of disease prevention and treatment that avoids drugs and surgery.) By 1940, according the U.S. Census, Geneva had relocated to Manhattan where she worked as a private nurse. The census also notes she had attained four years of college education.
