Friedrich Henkel was born March 31, 1899, in Breslau, Germany, the son of Luisa Henkel. He arrived in New York City on May 24, 1926, traveling on the ship Cleveland. At that time he was working as a clerk. He stated that he had an uncle, Bruno Schemallek, living in Westchester, New York. At the age of 27, he was 5'8", with a fair complexion and brown hair.

In 1940, Friedrich (or Fred) was living on West 91st Street in New York City. He was single, and working as a building porter. He had filed a petition for naturalization, which was granted on March 19, 1956 from the New York Southern District Court.
