Irene Cumming, freelance writer and editor, died on August 18, 2009 in New York. Daughter of the late James and Ducksilla (nee Elsie Battin) Cumming, she was born April 21, 1932 in Chicago. She graduated from Summit (N.J.) High School and earned a B.A. from Wellesley College in 1954. She published books from "Christianity" to the "Butterick Fabric Handbook." Her volunteer work included UN families, East Side Community Center, P.S. 59 PTA, NYPD's 17th Pct. Comm. Council, Romance Writers-NYC, Editorial Freelancer's Assoc. and Sisters in Crime. Her children have enjoyed her love, friendship, wit and intellect to the very end. Her husband Fred M. Kleeberg predeceased her. She is survived by her son, John Kleeberg of New York; and her daughter, Margaret Kelly and her husband Paul Kelly and granddaughters Marta and Anna of Greenville, N.Y. She is also survived by her brother, Jack (Valerie) Cumming of Carlsbad, Calif. and sister, Carol (Allan) Peterson of Gilbert, Ariz. Memorial service August 21 at 1:30 p.m. at the Mercantile Library, 17 East 47 Street, New York City.
