Frances Daution was a highly regarded painter and textile designer who split her time between homes in Manhattan and Paris. She was born Marie Elizabeth Hawke in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., on June 2, 1888, to Edward Hawke, Jr., and his wife Maria. She died in Fairfield, Conn., in 1987, just shy of her 100th birthday.
France's father Edward Hawke, Jr., followed the career path of his father, Edward Hawke, Sr., who was one of the most prominent and wealthy attornies in New York.
Frances's mother Maria died in 1906. In 1908, her father was married to Katherine Buckley, daughter of ..... . Frances was a bride's maid.
Frances traveled widely as a young woman. In 1916, she traveled to the U.K. to marry George Hill, an esteemed London banker. They wed in Scotland on XXX had a son, George Cameron Hill in 1918. The 1920 Census indicates that the family of three was living with France's father, stepmother, and brother Francis (born 1899), in their home at 89 West 25th Street. The baby died Sept. 23, 1923. He is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery. I can find no further mention of George Hill.
In 192X, Francis married Elie Dauton, a widower with two daughters. Elie was in the hotel business. Elie was the business associate of XXX Orteig, also in the hotel business. Two of Orteig's sons married Elie's two daughters.
He died in 1945.
