David Glewicki was born July 20, 1923, in Pirmasens, Bavaria, Germany, the son of Joseph Glewicki, who lived at 21 Chwanen St. in Pirmasens. David traveled to the United States under the auspices of the German Jewish Children's Aid Inc., based at 245 Fifth Avenue in New York City. He left Hamburg, Germany on January 30, 1935, sailing on the S.S. Washington, and arrived in New York on February 7, 1935.
In 1940, at the age of 16, David was attending High School and lodging with Fannie Goldklang at 869 Whitlock Avenue in the Bronx. By 1943 he was living at 150 West 98th Street in New York City.
The United States entered WWII on December 7, 1941, and on February 9, 1943, at the age of 20, David Glewicki enlisted in the U.S. Army, even though he was not yet a U.S. citizen. He was described as 5'9" tall, he weighed 119 pounds, and his civil occupation as "kitchen workers in hotels, restaurants, railroads, steamships, etc."
In April of 1943 David was serving in Company A, 13th Bn, stationed at Camp Wheeler, Georgia. His American citizenship was granted on April 9, 1943, in the U.S. District Court at Macon, Georgia.
Following his service in WWII, David married Mildred Jacoby on March 29, 1948 in Manhattan, New York.
David Glewicki died aged 58, on May 17, 1982. He was buried on Hart Island.
