August Malk was born in Viljandi, Estonia on the 15th of April 1894.  Viljandi, or "Fellin" as it was previously known, is a picturesque town located within the southern Estonian forests near Lake Viljandi.

August was a merchant seaman, and by 1952, had already worked at sea for 41 years.  He traveled to many different countries on many different ships, including the "Prince de Liege" where he served as 3rd Officer in 1939 and called at the ports of Istanbul in Turkey, Piraeus in Greece, Lisbon in Portugal, Antwerp in Belgium and Alexandria in Egypt.  He also traveled to Liberia, Algeria, Nova Scotia, and Cuba, amongst other places, serving sometimes as 2nd Mate, and sometimes as Chief Officer

On his WWII Draft Registration Card in 1942, August is described as being 5 feet 6 inches tall with gray eyes, brown hair, and a light complexion.  It was also noted on several ship manifests that he had a tattoo of an anchor on both hands.

August Malk died on the 5th of May 1982 and was buried on Hart Island on the 24th of June 1982.
