Andrew Puglies (correct spelling Pugliese) was born Andrew Joseph Pugliese on July 11, 1905 in New Rochelle, New York, the son of John/Giovanni and Mary (Parapugno) Pugliese. His parents were both Italian immigrants, with John coming to the United States in 1900, and Mary in 1901. Both became citizens in 1907.
John Pugliese supported his large family by working as a laborer, in 1920 as a plumber, and by 1930 in the concrete business. Andrew was the second born of 10 children, the nine others were Frank, Charles, John, Philomena/Minnie, Rose, Antonio/Thomas, James, Mary and Angelina. In 1925 the family also had the Parapugno grandparents, Francesco "Frank" and Rose (Belliza) Parapugno living with them at 438 89th Street in Brooklyn.
In 1925 several of the sons were employed: Frank as a chauffeur, Andrew at age 20 as an ice peddler, Charles as an auto mechanic, and John as a printer's apprentice. In 1930 Andrew and John were both working in the concrete business like their dad, and by 1930 Thomas was a clerk in a fruit market, and James was a boat builder.
Andrew registered for the draft in October of 1940. At that time the family was living at 179-24 Rockaway Boulevard, Jamaica South in Queens. Andrew was employed by the Straiano Moving company on 146th Street in Jamaica South. He was described as 5'4" tall, weighed 145 pounds, with brown eyes, black hair and a dark complexion.
In the fall of 1942, not quite a year after the U.S. entered World War II, Andrew enlisted in the U.S. Army as a Private at Fort Jay, Governors Island. His civil occupation was listed as "semi-skilled teamster." He was hospitalized in February 1944 for exposure to chlorine, and was discharged back to duty. He was discharged from Army service on September 4, 1945.
By 1950 Andrew, aged 42, and sister Angelina were the only two children still living at home, along with two of their parents' grandchildren.
Andrew Joseph Pugliese died on April 24, 1985 at New York Health and Hospitals/Color. He was buried May 30, 1985 on Hart Island.
