Andre Apostolides was born in Turkey on the 7th of March 1907. Beyond this, no records have been found that shed light on Andre's life or family in Turkey.
He was a merchant seaman and spent decades of his life at sea, working his way up from "Messhand" to "Chief Steward." His work in the Merchant Marines took him all over the world, and the ship manifests for those journeys can be found at Ancestry.com.
Of particular note, was his work during WWII when he sailed on the Belgian Gulf, a vessel transporting oil for the allied war effort, which made several journeys accross the Atlantic during the years when German U-Boats, hunting by night in packs, successfully torpedoed thousands of Allied supply ships. The Belgian Gulf sailed as part of a massive convoy with escort ships and a navy gun crew on board. In all, more than 30,000 merchant marines, from sunken or damaged ships, died as a result of the "Battle for the Atlantic."
Andre continued to work at sea through the 1950's. Beyond this, his life story is yet to be unfolded.
Andre died on the 12th of September 1981 and was buried on Hart Island on the 2nd of October 1981.
