Americo Stephen Chieffo (know as "Steve") was born November 20, 1909, in Manhattan, New York, the son of Italian immigrants Ralph and Marietta (Delboui) Chieffo. Other children in the family were Concetta, Peter and Ida.

In December of 1919 Steve visited his parent's native Italy with his cousins Teresa and Rafaele, returning from Naples to New York City on the S.S. Taorimina.

In 1930 the family lived on Crotona Avenue in the Bronx, where the father, Ralph, worked as a tailor. At that time Steve was twenty years old, and worked as a plumber.

Steve married Filomina "Minnie" Prata on January 8, 1934, in the Bronx. She was born November 24, 1907, the daughter of Raphael and Nancy Prata.

In 1940 Steve, Minnie, and their three year old son, Robert, were living on East Tremont Avenue in the Bronx, where Steve worked as a clerk in a grocery store.

In later life, Steve lived in an apartment on Hunter Avenue in the Bronx.
