Alphonse Bloch/Block was born August 23, 1894, in New York City, the only child of Michael and Johannah Bloch. The family lived in Manhattan, where Michael was a clothing manufacturer.
Alphonse registered for the WWI draft in 1917, but was rejected “on account of bad eyes.” He was described as single, “tall, medium build” with “brown eyes, brown hair.” At that time he was living on Madison Avenue in NYC, and working as a salesman for Cohn, Brown and Co. When WWII began, he again registered for the draft, and at that time was working for Atlantis Importers and Distributors in Manhattan.
The 1930 census shows him living in Manhattan, on W. 32nd St. at the Hotel Martinique. He gave his marital status as “divorced”, and his occupation as “salesman, medical supplies.”
Alphonse Bloch died December 6, 1983, at the age of 89. He was buried on Hart Island.
