Alice Enison was born Alice Raff on November 7, 1915 in Manhattan, the daughter of Henry M. and Bella (Meyer) Raff. Alice was an only child. From the time of her birth to around 1930 the family lived at 106 Intervale Avenue in the Bronx. Henry supported the family working as the manager in a clock factory. He was a Russian immigrant who came to the United States in 1891, and became a naturalized citizen in 1908.
In 1940 the family was living on Montgomery Avenue in the Bronx, and Alice, who had finished four years of high school, had joined the work force as a secretary.
On November 20, 1945 Alice married Leo Enison in Manhattan. Leo was the son of Daniel and Mollie Enison of Brooklyn, and had just spent 1943 and 1944 serving in the Navy during World War II.
From 1950 through at least 1959 Leo and Alice made their home at 442 E. 20th Street in Manhattan. They had a son, Richard, born around 1949. Leo supported his family by working as a watchmaker in a watch company.
